In addition, these challenges can be compounded with the diagnosis of aphasia, which in addition to affecting communication, can also have a major impact on quality of life. For many young stroke survivors, they have the potential to return to many of the higher-level things they enjoy. They just need a little guidance, the right mindset, support and resources and a team of people to help them along the way. Join Sahmad Nakumbe and his wife Taylor as they share their story about stroke rehabilitation, living with aphasia, the benefit of therapy, and the importance of positive mindset and an attitude of perseverance. This is a unique opportunity to participate in a discussion regarding stroke recovery and aphasia from the perspective of therapist, stroke survivor and family member. Panelist Bios Sahmad Nakumbe is the kind of person everyone hopes to have in their lives. He is the epitome of perseverance and over-coming every curveball life throws. In May 2018, Sahmad was a talented 26-year-old athlete who was competing in semi-pro football while also running his own company and completing his last semester of college when he had a massive stroke. This stroke affected Sahmad’s physical being as well as his ability to communicate. When he woke up in the hospital after his stroke, his entire right side was paralyzed, and the only word he could say was “Monday.” He had to re-learn EVERYTHING, including how to walk and talk. After months of multiple surgeries and intensive rehabilitation at Mount Carmel, Sahmad was discharged home to continue his recovery. Almost five years later, he has defied all odds; he is now independently working, driving and speaking publicly about his journey. To this day, he attends weekly speech therapy sessions to further improve his communication skills. Nicole Link is the lead speech therapist at Mount Carmel Rehabilitation Hospital, an affiliate of Encompass Health. She has spent the majority of her 13-plus year career working in the inpatient rehabilitation setting. She believes that teamwork, clinical excellence and compassion are the key ingredients in moving her profession forward and improving the lives of the patient's she serves. Goals After this webinar, participants will: Understand the benefit of speech therapy services in the inpatient rehabilitation hospital setting. Explain why mindset and attitude are crucial components to progress after stroke. List simple, actionable strategies to use when working with patients with aphasia. Develop a deeper understanding of aphasia from the perspective of a stroke survivor and their family. This free event is open to all ASHA members and non-members. It is not offered for PDHs, CMHs, or ASHA CEUs. https://stream.asha.org/asha-exchange-a-journey-forward-a-story-about-stroke-recovery-perseverance-and-the-benefits-of-therapy

Add to Calendar 01/01/1970 12:00 AM 01/01/1970 12:00 AM America/Los_Angeles How-To: Add a Description Video Length: 1:56 The large text field below your video title is where you will write your video description. The video description is used to give more detail about the contents of the video as well as to further entice the viewer to invest their time to watch the video. We recommend keeping the description short as well at about 150 characters. Similar to other word processing software, you can stylize your text. Things like making your text bold or italicized. But you can also hyperlink text. So for example, if we wanted to hyperlink John Smith’s name to his website, you simply highlight the text and select the hyperlink icon, then enter the URL. This function can be very useful for implementing a call to action such as downloading a PDF, event registration, or for further reading on a topic. You will also notice an “Add Media” button. This allows you to include files in your video description. When you click the button, a dialogue box will appear. You’ll see 2 tabs, Upload Files and Media Library. The Media Library contains all of the previously uploaded files. To use an existing file, click on the media icon and select “Insert Into Post”. Under the Upload Files tab, you can add a new piece of media. In this case we’ll upload a PDF document. Then select “Insert Into Post”. The media will be automatically hyperlinked in the video description. To edit the text displayed and other link settings, click on the pencil icon then the Link Options gear icon. Here you can change the target URL, the text displayed in your description, or whether or not to open the link in a new tab. In most cases it’s best to have the link open in a new tab. This helps viewers come back to your video after they have visited your linked content. https://stream.asha.org/how-to-add-a-description

No different than how Netflix has channels for comedy, drama, action, etc. This makes content easier for your viewers to find, and it also improves search engine optimization. Don’t be afraid to add your video to more than 1 channel. The more channels that the video is in, the more likely a viewer is to discover it. Before you start selecting your channels it is important to select the Library channel. This is what actually adds the video into the video library and all other channels are a subcategory of the Library channel. Similarly, let’s say I wanted to add this post to the Advertising channel. I would also need to select the Revenue Model channel, as it is a parent channel to Advertising. You will also see a Feature channel. Selecting this will place the video as the featured video at the top of your video home page. Since only 1 video can be featured at a time, the most recently published video with this channel selected will be displayed. Selecting the Unlisted channel hides the video from being listed in the video library and all channels, but is still viewable by anyone with the permalink. This is ideal for sharing videos with a select group of people. The Private channel takes this a step further by only allowing users who are logged in to the video site to view the video. https://stream.asha.org/how-to-add-your-post-to-a-channel

Many clinicians may feel they lack the time, skills, or competence to effectively address DEI; it might feel like one more thing on an already-long list of considerations and requirements. But if we focus on our passion for working with people and change our perspective about providing culturally responsive services, then it’s not more work, it is the work. This session discusses the value of addressing DEI as part of audiology and speech-language pathology services and provides practical ideas for how to start to embed DEI into practice. After Steve was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2011, the Gleasons created the Team Gleason Foundation, which provides equipment, technology, services, care, and life-changing adventures for people living with the disease. Prior to his diagnosis, Steve played football for the New Orleans Saints and blocked a punt the night the New Orleans Superdome reopened after Hurricane Katrina. The feat was widely celebrated as a rallying point for the city, which was recovering from the storm. Upon receiving his ALS diagnosis, Steve vowed there would be “no white flags,” refusing to give up on himself, his family, or others living with ALS. “No white flags” eventually became the rallying cry for many—including Team Gleason. Named for Annie Glenn, ASHA’s Annie Award honors those who have made a positive impact on the lives of people with communication disorders. Mrs. Glenn, who experienced a severe stutter well into her adult years, was a lifelong champion for people with speech, language, and hearing disorders. https://stream.asha.org/steve-and-michel-gleason-receive-2022-annie-glenn-award

Add to Calendar 01/01/1970 12:00 AM 01/01/1970 12:00 AM America/Los_Angeles What Is Vocal Fry? A Speech-Language Pathologist Explains The ASHA Leader asks Washington, D.C.-based SLP Laura Purcell Verdun four questions about vocal fry and how she treats it in clients. Read more about vocal fry: https://on.asha.org/2CfpEdh TRANSCRIPT: Glottal or vocal fry is really the lowest vocal register that's produced. [What is Vocal Fry?] It's this aperiodic staccato sound that's formed by compression of the arytenoid cartilages or the vocal processes which are at the back of the vocal folds. Yet the vocal folds are maintained in a relatively loose position - there's very little air flow - then the voice becomes very sort of a popping or a creaking sound. [So What Does It Sound Like?] It will sound such as, “ahhh,” or within speech it may sound [like], “Today is Tuesday.” [How Do You Aim to Treat It?] So the primary issue with vocal fry is really based upon the nature of the vocal fry which is that there is -- Did you catch that? “Vocal fry” -- where the nature of the voice changes related to insufficient air flow. So the goal with normalizing voice production or normalized voice quality is based upon sufficient air flow, periodic vibrations of the vocal folds, and then a four word resonance. [How Do You Work On It With Clients?] So from a therapy standpoint we would very much direct our efforts towards attending to the air flow, making sure they take a breath, make sure they check their posture -- their shoulders, and their chest are well-stabilized -- and that they're using sufficient air flow really from the beginning to the end of the sentence as it occurs most often at the end of the sentence. So instead of saying, “Today is Tuesday, November 17th.” You would say, “Today is Tuesday, November 17th,” in an effort to sustain the air flow. When you sing, you keep the air moving as you sing when you would never trail off. People tend to do that when they speak so it's about reinforcing that consistent steady air stream from the beginning to the end. https://stream.asha.org/what-is-vocal-fry-a-speech-language-pathologist-explains
